THE WINTER SKINCARE ROUTINE YOU NEED

If you haven’t already, it’s time to switch up your skincare routine for the winter season. The cold is harsh on the skin and it takes more than an expensive moisturizer to lock in hydration. Follow this 5 step plan for dewy skin all winter long.

CLEANSE

The cleanser you use needs to be strategic. When looking for the right cleanser, look at the ingredients – not just the pretty packaging or you will be left with dry skin and a dent in your wallet. Do your best to avoid parabens, synthetic colors, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, formaldehyde, toluene, propylene glycol, and alcohol – all of which are toxic and won’t help the case of having naturally glowing skin. Right now, I am loving the Cleansing Milk by Juice Beauty. If you wear makeup on the daily, I recommend double cleansing to really ensure everything is off your face before moving onto the next steps. Try adding Chamomile Lavender Water from Loli Beauty to your routine after cleansing and see what kind of difference it makes.

EXFOLIATION

I am big into exfoliation. I used to use mechanical exfoliants with beads, sand, apricot pieces – you know the ones, not realizing that these products were creating micro-tears in my skin. After many hours (days, let’s be real) searching for answers online, I started using daily acid exfoliation and it.is.life changing. A mild daily exfoliation is an easy step to add and it seriously changes the game. Right now I am using Glossier Solution, a cult favorite for a reason, but I list a few other favorites below. Look for a toner with AHA, BHA, and PHA which all act to remove dead skin cells. Start with 3-4x a week and slowly build up depending on what your skin can handle. Note: my skin is super sensitive and I can use the Solution every day so it is pretty mild, but everyone is different. You don’t want to over exfoliate, because that will just make your dry skin worse so that is why a mild daily exfoliation works well because it doesn’t irritate the skin the same way, at least in my experience.

SERUM

The rule of thumb when it comes to skincare is light to heavy. Start with the serums, oils, and lightweight lotions before finishing with heavy-duty moisturizers to lock it all in. A serum is next up on the menu. This is the time to target any problem areas: pigmentation, redness, or in my case – extra hydration. I’m telling you, my skin is actually the Sahara desert. If you’re like me and want extra hydration, look for hyaluronic acid in the ingredients list. For a brighter complexion look for Vitamin C also known as L-ascorbic Acid. To get on the anti-aging train, look for Retinol. If you are using a serum and a daily acid exfoliator make sure to get the timing right or you might seriously irritate your skin. An easy tip is to use the daily exfoliator in the morning and the serum at night, but do your research on what you can and cannot layer depending on what serum you choose.

OIL

Even if you have oily skin you shouldn’t run from oils. They actually help to balance the skins pH levels, which you want to be around 5.5 for all you nerds out there. I am obsessed with my serum from Palermo Beauty. It has all the good stuff, rosehip seed, argan oil, apricot kernel oil, the list goes on. I would recommend it to literally everyone.

MOISTURIZER

You can mix & match and layer different serums, potions, powders all day long, but I’m here for efficiency. I LOVE skincare, but I also don’t want to spend 30 minutes every day on the application. I’m here for a good time, not a long time – you know? So the next step is a heavy duty moisturizer to lock everything in.

For lips, I am a Bite Beauty groupie. The Agave Lip Mask is actually the best lip product ever invented. Buy it now, I promise you won’t regret it. I slather this stuff on my lips at night and in the morning my lips feel like I just put it on, incredible.

For the eyes, best to start early on the eye cream with aging and all of that. I have dark circles under my eyes so I have been using SkinCeuticals A.G.E Complex .

WHILE YOU SLEEP

Don’t put all of this effort into your skin just to rub it all off on your pillow. Opt for a silk pillowcase to help keep most of the product on your face as you sleep. These are also great for your hair FYI.

A LITTLE EXTRA HELP

A facial can make all the difference. I just started going to Skin Laundry in NYC and I can already tell the texture of my skin is different (in the best way possible). Stay up to date on how my skin progresses on my Instagram.
